An Archive Piece The retired mark
Midlands Apothecary

Made before this workshop became Sigil & Hide, it carries the earlier Midlands Apothecary mark debossed into the leather, and ships in the original presentation box. Same bench, same hands, same full-grain leather. Once these are gone, that mark is retired for good.

On its way

Hand-crafted from Pueblo leather, sourced from the prestigious Italian tannery Badalassi Carlo. The Bakewell begins with a unique, slightly coarse matte texture. With every use, the leather transforms, naturally polishing its fibres to develop a rich, smooth patina that darkens in tone and reflects your unique history.

The wallet features three internal card slots, ideal for storing credit cards or business cards. Behind the left-hand card slots is a full-width slip pocket, perfect for keeping folded notes or bills. On the opposite side is a sleeve for extra bills, notes or cards. The asymmetric layout creates a dynamic, modern, and engaging visual presence.

Approximate Dimensions

  • The dimensions of the wallet is approximately 186mm tall by 126mm wide (when open)

How it's made

The wallet is made from five cuts of leather with complementary coloured thread. Once cut, the internal cut-outs are sanded, bevelled and burnished. A piece of skived leather is used to separate the right-hand card slot, in an accent colour that mirrors the cover. At this point, I complete the debossing and personalisation.

Each piece is then adhered along the edges using water-based contact adhesive. Once dry, the stitching holes are punched and the panels are hand-stitched using 0.8mm Tiger Thread. The stitching is lightly hammered to lower its profile, then the outer edges are sanded, bevelled and burnished. Each wallet can take up to two hours to craft by hand.

Natural Leather Characteristics

  • The colour of your leather piece may differ slightly from what you see on your screen.
  • Due to the dyeing process, the colour may vary slightly depending on the area of the leather.
  • As full-grain leather undergoes minimal processing, natural wrinkles may remain visible and their patterns can vary from piece to piece.
  • With natural leather, some blemishes are to be expected, though I always do my best to keep these to a minimum.
